E welina mai nei e Peni Polena,
Our group which stems from the Kahaluu Kona area did the research on Tutu Naluahine Kaopua and all of the original po'e of that area and it's descendants.if you are on Oahu the main descendants live in Waimanalo who are the keepers of the ohana info. If you were refering to a photo of Naluahine, it can be found in the Archives and all of his notes together with Henry Kekahuna's and Theodore Kelseys notes. Malama na ohana, NT Flo

Hui!
Was wondering if Kumu Hula Rae Fonseca is your ohana and if so, e kala mai ia'u for your loss. He was far too young, with so much more to give. Very sad indeed! Is Ben Spalding Fonseca your makuakane? I added him as a friend.

Aloha e Peni Polena,
We did the research of Tutu Naluahine Kaopua last year with the descendants of the Kahaluu area...the connections to him would be the families in Kahaluu and Puuananhulu, Kona..one of the extended ohana is the Spaldings..lots of info on Tutu at Bishop M. Archives or State Archives with Theodore Kelsey and Henry Kekahuna..take care.

Aloha Peni, Read yr request here. I have some info on Tutu Naluahine Kaopua..we did research on the families who originated from Kahalu'u, Kona akau. He was an informant of all that had to do with that area and worked with Theodore Kelsey and Henry Kekahuna. They did wonderful work. The descendants are still present in both Kahaluu and Puuanahulu areas today. His home was on what is now the grounds of Keauhou Resort and Spa. The families connected to him are Upchurch, Keakealani, Malanui, Kahulamu, Keawe Alapai, Kaolelo, Spalding, Fujisaka, Makini, etc. NT Flo

Who is the picture of the elderly man? Is he a Spalding-Fonseca? What Spalding still lives in Hilo or is it Keaukaha?

E kala mai ia'u for not responding sooner. My personal computer isn't working so I can't access Maoli World as often as I would like. Anyway, mahalo for the family info. Yes I did know about Hattie having a son Joseph Aiwohi Kawai w/ my tutu Abigail's husband C.G. Kamohoalii Hopkins. My Dad, who is named after him, traveled to Moloka'i for work and met up w/ two sisters who turned out to be Joseph's daughters. They recognized his name as being the same as their Dad's father. They are the ones that gave my father the Aiwohi genealogy.

What happened to Hattie? Did she marry and have other keiki? I was happy to hear that your tutu Wahinekapu was Joseph's hanai mother. It saddened me to know that the family had shunned Hattie, she was so young when she had Joseph. There was another sister named Emma, do you know anything about her?

Was Samuel Aiwohi a kahu? Or a kahuna la'au lapa'au? I was reading some Hawaiian Language newspapers about him, but I couldn't translate well as my olelo Hawaii is not pa'a. And what do you know about the land transactions in 'Ainakea? How did the family come to lose all that land exactly? I have heard stories pertaining to Rev. Bond.
What is interesting is that two of the older siblings were named after him. It appears that one boy died young and than another was born and given the same name Elia Bono Aiwohi. It appears that the family had a falling out with the Congregational Church, and became Catholics. My grandpa was baptized Catholic and attended St. Louis High School where other Aiwohi's attended as well. I would love to come to the Aiwohi reunion on Moloka'i this summer. Let me know when it is so I can make arrangements.

Aloha a hui hou,
Miliaulani

Mahalo for adding me as a friend. Actually, we are 'ohana. My great-great grandmother was Abigail Kamaka Pahoa Aiwohi. She had a sister, Lily Wahinekapu Aiwohi, who married a Spalding. Abigail married Charles Kamohoalii Hopkins and together they had 7 children, one of whom was my greatgrandmother Angela Kawahinepiilani Hopkins. She had my grandfrather who was a hanai of Abigail and Kamohoalii.

Your kupunawahine is buried up in Makiki Cemetery with her older sister Abigail, in our family plot. If you go to my page, there are some pictures of the Hopkins plot. My father, Charles G. Kamohoalii Hopkins (named after his great-grandfather)) died in 2008 and we buried him there with his kupuna. Also in the plot is Samuel Aiwohi's first and second wife along with two of his keiki. I don't know where Samuel is.

I am always grateful to make family connections and Maoli World has opened up some doors. Happy to answer any questions you might have.
